Man gets half-million dollar settlement in wife's OD death

Dealing with a chronic health condition each day is trying for both the individual suffering from the health problems as well as for any supporting family members. Patients turn to the medical expertise of their physicians in order to escape the struggles of their health issues, desperately hoping for relief and improved health. However, when that trust has been misplaced and a physician's negligence leads to the death of their patient, surviving family members look for answers.

A widower who sued an Alabama physician for the wrongful death of his wife has been awarded a $500,000 settlement in a recently concluded jury trial, according to recently revealed information. The man had initially filed the suit in 2004 after his wife died because she received high doses of narcotic medication.

Alabama family files wrongful death suit in boys' drowning deaths

The family of two young boys who drowned in an apartment complex swimming pool has filed a lawsuit against the facility and others claiming they were negligent, and thus responsible for causing the death of their two sons, according to news sources in Montgomery, Alabama. The boys, ages 5 and 7, were found dead in the swimming pool in April.

Those named in the wrongful death suit include the apartment complex, the company that provides management services for the complex, and the apartment manager herself. The management services company is a property management firm that has holdings throughout the nation.

Family files suit against officers for schizophrenic man's death

Police officers are sworn to protect and serve the citizens of their local jurisdictions. Sometimes, though, cops do more harm than good, unnecessarily attacking individuals who may simply have behavioral problems. At least that's what one family says happened when Alabama law enforcement officers gunned down a schizophrenic man on the evening of Jan. 31 this year.

The family has filed a wrongful death suit in the case. They claim that the officers involved in the incident violated procedures for dealing with mentally ill patients, violating the man's civil rights and ultimately causing his death.

Alabama's nursing homes unprepared for natural disasters

According to historical statistics regarding major natural disaster declarations, Alabama is in the top 10 nationwide. As such, our state should take great care in protecting our most vulnerable population: nursing home residents. Unfortunately, the Health and Human Services Department unveiled a report last week that said nursing homes are horribly unprepared to protect residents during a natural disaster.

The report said that emergency plans often do not include steps to coordinate with local first responders, notify relatives, identify residents, nor ensure their medication is available during an evacuation. Nursing home negligence was also evident in their preparedness to maintain contact with transportation outlets in the event of an emergency. The HHS report recommended that Medicare and Medicaid include specific training and planning requirements to nursing home disaster plans nationwide.
