Two teenagers who were riding ATVs with a group of friends were severely injured when their vehicle flipped. One teen died and the other was listed in critical condition as a result of the four-wheeler accident. It is unknown whether the accident was caused by human error or a mechanical malfunction.
The teens, both 18-years-old, were high school sweethearts. They graduated from different local high schools in 2011.
According to reports, a group of friends were riding four ATVs down the street from the young man's home. He was driving with his girlfriend riding on the back when the vehicle flipped. When investigators recovered the vehicle, it appeared that the right tire had blown out. The young woman died as a result of the accident and her boyfriend was sent to the hospital.
None of the people riding that day were wearing protective headgear, though they did find helmets in the young man's home.
One of the first responders said that, while helmets are no guarantee to save a life, they can often help. Everyone says it, but the seriousness seems to be lost until a tragic accident like this happens. According to a family friend, the young man is expected to recover, but he is experiencing brain swelling.
The police chief said that the accident was a tragedy and the department's thoughts and prayers go out to both families.
A highway patrolman who was part of the crew sent to retrieve the crashed vehicle said that he will write tickets for any ATV riders he sees riding without helmets.
